Our Environmental Enforcement team visited businesses along Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, on Thursday 20 July 2023, to ensure they had trade waste agreements in place and were storing and disposing of their waste legally.

The team visited 20 premises, including restaurants, takeaways, barbers, newsagents, salons and estate agents, to ensure waste was contained to prevent any nuisance, mess or vermin issues. Of the businesses checked, two were no longer operating, 10 were fully compliant and eight could not produce the correct documentation to prove their duty of care compliance.

These eight businesses have now been issued a notice requiring them to supply us with the requested documentation within 14 days. Failure to comply is an offence and will result in the business receiving a £300 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) and/or being made liable to prosecution.

Businesses are responsible for ensuring the waste they produce is dealt with appropriately and legally. If you run a business, you must ensure that the waste produced or handled is stored, transported and disposed of safely by a licensed waste carrier.

You must put all waste out for collection as instructed by our Commercial Waste team, or your licensed waste carrier. If you put commercial waste on the street in unidentifiable containers, such as black sacks, or put out more waste than you pay to have collected, you could receive a FPN of £400 or be prosecuted for fly-tipping.
