Elections - frequently asked questions

I have lost my poll card, can I still vote?

If you have lost your polling card, just go to your polling station and tell the staff your full name and address and you will be able to vote.

Do I need to take identification to a polling station?

Yes. From Thursday 4 May 2023, you will be required to show photo ID in order to be able to vote. Find out more about voter identification at polling stations.

What happens in a polling station?

When you arrive in the polling station, please tell the staff your name and address so they can check that you are on the electoral register. You will also need to show them your photo identification.

The staff at the polling station will give you the ballot papers for the elections and referendums being held. You then go to the polling booth to mark the ballot, selecting your individual preference. Notices will be displayed to advise you how may votes you can cast on each ballot paper.

Do not make any other mark on the ballot paper or your vote may not be counted.

Once you have selected your preference, place your ballot paper, folded, into the ballot box provided.

What time are the polling stations open?

Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm. The location of your polling station is printed on your poll card.
