Celebrating 1,000 Street Champions

The number of Street Champions in Dacorum has passed the 1,000 mark, emphasising our residents’ determination to keep their borough cleaner, greener and safer.

Our Street Champions are volunteers, of all ages, from the local community that help to improve an area by litter-picking and reporting issues such as fly-tipping.

From Dacorum’s youngest Street Champion, aged three, and teenagers contributing as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme to many that have retired, everyone involved is committed to making the borough a better place in which to live and work.

As a volunteer, there is no formal commitment and you can do as much or as little as you like, either in a group or independently.

Cllr Graham Barrett, our Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the time given by our Street Champions, whose hard work to help keep their local neighbourhoods tidy is so important and shows a huge amount of dedication.

“The volunteers are an absolute credit and a valuable asset to our communities and borough, and they deserve huge amounts of recognition.”

If you have time available to help and are interested in joining our Street Champions team, you can register on our Street Champions page to get your free litter-picking equipment. As Street Champions, all volunteers receive a litter-picking stick, a high visibility vest, a pair of gloves and a roll of refuse and recycling bags.

We can also provide litter-picking equipment for community groups and schools to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the year. The Great British Spring Clean, taking place during March and April 2023, is a great opportunity to organise a litter pick. If you would like to take part and borrow some equipment for a large group, please email cleansafegreen@dacorum.gov.uk.
