Hate crime

A hate crime is when somebody is targeted because of their:

  • age
  • gender
  • being married or in a civil partnership
  • being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • disability
  • race - including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation.

These are known as protected characteristics.

Types of hate crime

Hate crimes can include:

  • threatening behaviour
  • assault
  • robbery
  • damage to property
  • inciting others to commit hate crimes
  • harassment
  • online abuse

Report a hate crime

You can report hate crime by:

  • Contacting the Police by calling 999 if the crime is in progress or 101 in a non-emergency situation
  • Going to the Report it website
