We're giving away free compost to mark International Compost Awareness Week 2022.
Dacorum residents can come to Cupid Green Depot, Redbourn Road, Hemel Hempstead, HP2 7BA, on Sunday 15 May 2022 between 8.30am and 11.30am to pick up some free compost.
The compost will be limited to two bags per vehicle and given away on a first-come, first-served basis - so please arrive early to avoid disappointment. The event may end early if compost runs out.
Residents are asked to stay in their vehicles and the compost will be pre-bagged and our crews will load the bags into your car.
Last year, by putting grass cuttings, leaves, twigs, flowers and weeds into their green-lidded bins, our residents diverted more than 10,000 tonnes of garden waste from landfill so that it could be recycled into compost instead. Biogen is the company responsible for converting the contents of the green-lidded bin into this nutrient-rich compost, which will be on offer at the giveaway.
Compost has a range of benefits, such as improving soil quality, growing healthy plants, reducing the use of fertiliser and pesticides and is even an effective method of reducing harmful greenhouse gases.
The compost on offer also has the added benefit of being peat free, unlike most shop-bought composts. Peatlands store a third of the world’s soil carbon, so when peat bogs are harvested for garden compost, carbon dioxide and methane is released into the atmosphere, which contributes to climate change. As the compost is peat free it is much better for the environment.
