Dacorum celebrates Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day 2018 - dog display

The sun shone over Gadebridge Park, Hemel Hempstead, on Saturday as crowds turned out for our special Armed Forces Day celebration, organised with support from the Ministry of Defence.

Thousands of people supported the special day in Dacorum, which marked the centenary of the end of the First World War and the 10th year of Armed Forces Day campaign, and was attended by Minister of State for Defence and Deputy Leader of the House of Lords, Frederick Curzon, 7th Earl Howe.

Dacorum Mayor Cllr Rosie Sutton opened the event and then crowds were entertained by the Portsmouth Action Field Gun Display team, who demonstrated their teamwork during two artillery displays.

The Rockwood Dog Display team showcased their skills by tackling assault courses, including jumping through hoops of fire.

Music filled the park thanks to vintage trio the Rockabellas, the Royal Yeomanry Band and RAF Halton’s Military Wives Choir and there were performances from the Revelations Majorettes.

Families enjoyed the fairground rides, adventure equipment and a variety of stalls, stands and activities in the park.

Sir Mike Penning MP presented awards to talented local primary school children, who had sharpened their pencils to enter our schools poster competition. Winners in the age categories were Bea, Eliza and Lucy - with Year Six pupil Lucy named as the overall winner.

Cllr Neil Harden, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services, said: “We are proud to support Armed Forces Day. Putting on a free family event in Gadebridge Park is our way of saying thank you to the Armed Forces personnel and their families.”

Similar events have been taking place across the UK, enabling people to come out and show their support, giving a much-valued morale boost for the Armed Forces.
