Recycling rate hits 51.1 per cent

Residents in Dacorum are now recycling 51.1 per cent of their rubbish, which means that we're now officially recycling more than we're throwing away!

The recycling rate 15 years ago was at around 12 per cent. The increase in recycling across the borough has been attributed to residents embracing the new recycling system that was brought in three years ago. The change allowed residents to benefit from improvements in technology, which have made recycling easier. Raising public awareness around recycling issues has also helped recycling rates to steadily increase.

We want our recycling rate to reach over 60 per cent, and we're excited to be working towards that target over the coming years.

Portfolio Holder for Environment, Sustainability and Regulatory Services, Councillor Janice Marshall, said, "I'm really pleased that our residents are making the effort to recycle efficiently using their kerbside and neighbourhood facilities. This increased recycling rate demonstrates that people are understanding more and more that the items we throw away carry both an environmental and economic value. It's therefore important to give items a new life by recycling them rather than putting them in our grey bins. I hope that this good performance continues to grow so that together we can reach our target of a 60 per cent recycling rate in Dacorum."
